To create a sense of arrival and spatial complexity on this large, flat lot, the main entry of this young family’s home is set back into a partially covered exterior court. This court is sheltered from the street by a detached two-story pavilion structure. The entry axis bisects the 4,500 square foot house into two halves that are connected by a large linear skylight. The southern half of the house contains the more formal elements of the program and the northern half contains the family-oriented spaces for the kitchen, media and game rooms. Both halves open to landscaped courtyards and a pool via large, pocketing, sliding doors that introduce an indoor/outdoor flexibility to the floor plan. All bedrooms are on the second floor. The freestanding pavilion at the front contains a first floor office—accessed through the entry court—and a second floor guest bedroom entered by crossing an exterior bridge from the main house.
